tips for lawn care

Beautifying your home usually starts on the inside. Before most people even think of putting effort into their lawn care, they prioritize setting up the inside of their home just how they like it. There are two reasons for this, the first reason is that you spend most of your time in the house, therefore it makes sense to prioritize indoor projects and maintenance. The second reason is properly maintaining your yard is hard work. You can spend 3 hours of your Sunday outside, just to have to go back and do it again the following week; it can be disheartening for those that don’t have a passion for gardening.

This can cause a lot of people, especially the busy ones, just to do the minimum possible: Cut the grass whenever it gets noticeably long, disregard weeds and go extra short so that you can get away with fewer cuts. The bottom line is, no matter how many corners you cut, you’re still going to have to go out every 1-2 weeks and get to work. You may as well maximize that time and ensure your lawn is beautiful. You would be surprised, that just a little extra effort and care would render your yard the envy of the neighbourhood. Follow these simple lawn care tips and create a yard worth spending time in:

1) Do Not Cut It Short

Cutting your lawn too short results in damaging it and creating space for weeds to infiltrate your yard. The best way to maintain a nice lush yard is to only remove about a third of the of the height of the blades of grass. It’s also important to keep your lawn mower blade sharp; a dull blade results in tearing the grass, which gives the lawn a brownish hue.

2) When To Water

If you water your lawn in the middle of the day when the sun is at its strongest, it will burn your lawn. If you water your lawn in the middle of the night, the water festers and can open the door to disease. The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning, this will give it time to penetrate the grass and then slowly evaporate as the sun slowly strengthens throughout the morning for optimum lawn care.

3) Nutrients

It’s important to feed your lawn nutrients twice a season: In the spring, before the grass goes into full growth and in the late summer when growth tapers off. The primary nutrient you should be feeding it is nitrogen, ensure not to overfeed because that will burn your grass.

4) Aeration

This an important lawn care tip most people overlook. In order for the nutrients to penetrate the soil, you need to aerate your lawn so that nutrients gain a path to the soil via the holes. The best time to aerate is in the spring when the lawn is growing strong so that the holes in your lawn are repaired quickly by overgrowth.

5) Weed Control

Finally, the mother of all lawn care concerns; weed control. By using a pre-emergent herbicide early in the spring, you can stop weeds in their tracks before the seeds start to germinate. This should resolve most of your weeds, but there should still be odd ones here and there that you should remove by hand before cutting your lawn. Cutting over the weeds will make them harder to pick and may spread their seed.
