Decorating Industrial Living Spaces

When decorating your place it’s rarely a good idea to just toss everything together and see if it all fits. Instead, you should choose a style you want and then find out which elements are needed to make it work.

One of the latest trends is making your home look like the factories and warehouses of old. Here’s what you need to do to add a touch of that industrial style to your place:

1. Go for rough and exposed

When you walk into an old factory or warehouse you’ll most likely see exposed concrete, steel beams, and exposed brick. Any of these elements, including stainless steel and unfinished wood, are what you’re looking to have in our walls and structure. Most people for for that industrial look set up floors made of polished concrete. You also can’t go wrong with stone or timber flooring.

2. It’s all about metal

Industrial design means setting up a room so that it’s inspired by old factories, barns, etc. Back then, the use of metals and industrial products was huge when it came to cabinets, plumbing, lighting fixtures, and more. Using wrought iron, cast iron, brushed nickel, and copper in your furniture and decorations will really give the space an industrial vibe.

3. Find mechanical items

Check out an older warehouse or manufacturing facility in your city and you’ll find objects with their mechanical workings exposed. Elements like these are perfect for giving a room that industrial feeling. Things like scissor accordion light sconces and pulley-inspired lighting will definitely get the job done, especially if they feature muted green/gray or rust red colors. Metal wheels are also good so try finding rolling tables, carts, etc.

4. Visit an army-navy store

One of the best places to shop for the perfect accessory you didn’t know your industrial-inspired room needed is the army-navy store. Here you’ll find army blankets, military trunks, tin plates, and other raw-material furnishing— usually at a discount. Also keep an eye out for outdoor things to put in your home as well, especially solid wood or metal chairs. Remember: a little bit of rust or wear is actually a good thing.

5. Pick the right lighting

What you choose to light your space is huge no matter what decor style you’re going for. If you want to transport visitors into the industrial age the moment they step into your place, pendant lights area must. Combine them with freestanding floor lamps or any caged lights bought from a budget-friendly vintage store and you’re set.

6. Lose the bright, bold colors

The color palette of your space should match the raw materials in your furniture and accessories. This means combining those metal lamps and wood chairs with warm, neutral tones like grey and black. White is also OK since it will help draw attention to the natural colors of your other industrial-inspired interior.
