5 Tips to Maximize Your Closet Space
Closet space is one of the first things on a buyers mind once they’ve found a suitable home. Often times people find the home of their dreams, only to be disheartened to find out that the closet space is not nearly sufficient to house their wardrobe. You would be surprised how often buyers give up on a house for this reason.
Another common occurrence is young families moving into a house and being satisfied with the closet space initially, only to outgrow it. As kids get bigger, so do their clothes; as families progress, there’s always the potential for a new addition to the house as well. This leaves parents scrambling for areas to store clothes in.
The good news is, people rarely use closet space to its fullest, there are several techniques you can use to maximize closet space without having to resort to eyesores, such as external racks. The first thing you need to do is go through all your clothes and eliminate items you no longer wear. This is a process that should be done at least once a year, usually around spring cleaning. For children and babies, you have to incorporate this filtration process two or three times a year, as they are constantly growing out of their clothes. Once you’ve collected and donated all the useless clothes, follow some of these tips to maximize your space:
1) Organize By Season
A Common mistake people make is storing all their seasonal clothes together. While you’re discarding your old garments, organize your current garments by season. This enables you to only display the current season’s wardrobe, while all your other clothes can be stored elsewhere.
2) Chains And S Hooks
Often times it’s not the thickness of your clothes that’s the problem, it’s the hangers that limit your space. By attaching a short chain to an S hook, you can take advantage of the vertical space in your closet and hang three or four garments where there was otherwise space for one or two.
3) Use Your Floor Space
Often times you’ll find that it’s hard to use the floor space in your closets, this is largely due to longer garments, such as dresses and coats, dominating the floor space. Arranging your garments from longest to shortest will free up some much-needed space without compromising any other areas.
4) Be Creative With The Closet Door
You’ll notice that there’s a significant amount of dead space behind your closet door. You can take advantage of it by installing rods or shelving. The easiest way maximize that area without messy installation is to simply purchase an ‘Over The Door Shoe Rack.’
5) Maximize Your Upper Shelf
The main issue with the upper shelf in your closet is that it’s difficult to maximize. Objects you put up there rarely reach the ceiling, leaving with the following options; wasting the space or piling stuff on top of each other, which doesn’t look elegant and is a hazard. Rectify this by installing one or two shelves to give you additional layers of space.
